Man United 5 Wigan 0

United crushed Wigan at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Rafael Da Silva, Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia. The win leaves United just two points behind leaders Chelsea going into the new year, and if anything the margin of victory could have been greater with Rooney twice hitting the woodwork. It is the second time United have beaten Wigan 5-0 this season after their August clash at the DW Stadium.

Kuszczak 6.5: Not hus fault that wigan is not attacking much.

Rafael 7.5: Much better defensive display and a good goal.

Vidic 6.5: Played decently.

Brown 7: Played well defensively and join attack occasionally.

Evra 6: An off-night or a night off?

Valencia 8: A good goal and some assists, some crossess were a bit deep though.

Carrick 7: Nice goal and good midfield display.

Fletcher 7: Back to his natural position.

Park 6.5: Showed energy and played better than the past few games.

Berbatov 7.5: Sublime touches and a nice goal.

Rooney 7.5: Blew hot and cold over 90 mins!

Subs:

Anderson (sub Vidic 67, 5.5) OK.

Welbeck (sub Berbatov 67, 5.5) Nothing to show

Fabio (sub Evra 67, 5.5) Enjoyed the game.

29 December 2009

Hull 1 Man United 3

UNITED closed the gap at the top of the Premier League to just two points with a hard-fought victory at the KC Stadium.

Wayne Rooney scored in first half time injury time and despite a Craig Fagan equaliser from the spot, the Reds secured a vital three points with an Andy Dawson own goal and a Dimitar Berbatov tap-in.

Fulham 3 United 0

Lacking in imagination and confidence, United's crippling injury list has clearly caught up with them as they missed the chance to draw level with Chelsea at the top of the table and suffered a fifth loss of the season. Danny Murphy, Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff were all on target for the home side as the Reds' patched up defence finally crumbled.

Kuszczak (5.5): Made one early superb save, should have done better for 1st goal.

Fletcher (5.5): Unable to get into his role.

Carrick (5.5): Not physical enough to match Zamora.

De Laet (5.5): Still learning and tough for him to partner 2 midfielders in defence.

Evra (5.5): One of his worst games.

Valencia (5.5): Did not receive much support and cannot break Fulham's defence.

Scholes (4.5): Bad game, gave away ball for first goal. Bad tackles and misplaced passess.

Gibson (5): His shooting was off and he is nothing without the shooting.

Anderson (4.5): Is it time to sell him? Only played well in a few games each season.

Rooney (5.5): Effort was there, but could not do much.

Owen (5): A bad game.

Subs:

Berbatov (sub Gibson 57, 5) Little impact.

Fabio (sub De Laet 57, 5.5) Attacked well.

Welbeck (sub Owen 72, 5) Couldn't get into it.

17 December 2009

Man United 3 Wolves 0

It had been an opening of uninspiring fare and United seemed to struggle to raise their game. United were in need of some outside help to make their dominance pay and they got it when Ronaldo Zubar inexplicably handled a Darron Gibson corner. The French Under 21 international had Vidic in close proximity but his offence was puzzling. Rooney won the battle with Hahnemann with a powerful penalty.

Gibson proved he has set piece accuracy to match his thunderbolt shooting when he sent over a second corner bang in the path of Vidic’s run and though Hahnemann got a hand to the Serb’s powerful header he could only help it over the line.

Both Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia had been disappointing peripheral figures against opposition they could have destroyed if they’d really got their teeth into it. They showed how easy they could have done it when the Bulgarian hooked a delicate pass over his right hand shoulder and the Ecuadorian thrashed in a cracker.

Man United 0 Aston Villa 1

LACKLUSTRE Manchester United suffered their first Premier League home defeat of the season at the hands of Aston Villa. Gabriel Agbonlahor headed home Ashley Young's cross to put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes. The closest United came to an equaliser was Wayne Rooney's first-half effort that bounced away off the underside of the bar.

The Reds are now three points behind Chelsea after the league leaders drew with Everton earlier on. Agbonlahor had scored in the past three seasons against the Reds, so he was completing a rather impressive four-timer when he nodded home Young’s right-wing cross.

Kuszczak (6): Not that much to do

Fletcher (6): Inexperience in right back showed against better wingers

Brown (5.5): Caught off-guard for Villa winner

Vidic (6): Form had dipped this season

Evra (6.5): Lively display, but no end products

Valencia (6): Need to run at the defenders more

Carrick (6.5): One of the better players on the field

Anderson (5): Disappointing game, no impact

Park (5.5): Lost the ball too often

Giggs (5.5): Crosses and passes seldom reach intended targets

Rooney (6.5): Limited support from other players, played his heart out and nearly scored

Subs:

Owen (sub Giggs 45, 5.5) At least offered a partner for Rooney

Berbatov (sub Park 62, 6) Got into good positions, one miskick and another effort saved

Gibson (sub Anderson 68, 5.5) Not much extra offered after replacing Anderson

Wolfsburg 1 United 3

A PATCHED up Manchester United finished top of their Champions League group thanks to Michael Owen's hat-trick against Wolfsburg.

The Reds took the lead when Owen headed home Nani's cross just before half time only for rumoured United target Edin Dzeko to equalise with a powerful header.

Substitute Gabriel Obertan's superb turn and cross created an easy tap in for Owen to put the Reds back in front, before the striker's smart chip sealed the win late on.

The victory was all the more impressive given United were missing 12 players through injury, Ryan Giggs was suspended and Ritchie De Laet ineligible.

07 December 2009

West Ham 0 Man United 4

United crushed the Hammers at Upton Park to keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea. The only worries for United were injuries picked up by defensive pair Gary Neville and Wes Brown.

Paul Scholes scored the first with a trademark strike, albeit with his left foot, in injury time in the first-half. In the second-half Darron Gibson extended the lead with an even sweeter effort after a surging run by Giggs. At which point the West Ham door swung clean open with Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney supplying tap-ins after the Hammers defence had been swept aside.

Kuszczak (6.5): A marvellous save from Diamanti free kick and a poor kick from a simple backpass.

Fletcher (7): Good enough to be starting at right-back even when the regulars are back.

Neville (5.5): Nothing much to do, until he got injured.

Brown (7): Competent defending, led the make-shift back 4.

Evra (7): Again, attack well, defensively out of position occasionally.

Valencia (7): Good speed and strength and a goal too.

Gibson (6.5): A great goal, average otehrwise.

Scholes (7.5): Cracking goal and bossed the mid-field. A stupid yellow though.

Anderson (6.5): Lazy, not forward running, did not run to open space, slightly better in the last 30 min.

Giggs (7): Good game, make some good passes.

Rooney (6.5): Lack of service, but a nice run for the tap-in.

Subs:

Carrick (sub Neville 34, 7) Played well in unfamiliar position.

Berbatov (sub Gibson 67, 6.5) Neat touches.

Owen (sub Rooney 73, 5.5) did not do much.

04 December 2009

Man United 2 Tottenham 0

2 cracking strikes from Darron Gibson sent Manchester United through to the Carling Cup semi-finals at the expense of Tottenham. The Reds were put under pressure early on by a lively Spurs side, but Gibson struck after 16 and 38 minutes to put Sir Alex Ferguson's men in command.

United will play City in the 2-legged semi.

30 November 2009

Portsmouth 1 Man United 4

United were ahead in the 25th minute through Rooney. Antonio Valencia burst forward and exchanged passes with Rooney, and when the winger pulled the ball back for his team-mate in the penalty area, the England forward waited for a clumsy challenge to arrive from Michael Brown. Dean pointed to the spot immediately and Rooney tucked away the penalty.

Pompey were level, however, on the half-hour mark, although why Dean awarded it was open to debate. Kuszczak climbed above Piquionne, who appeared to have his shirt pulled by Nemanja Vidic. With United in shock, Boateng smashed in the penalty after missing against Stoke last time out.

United were ahead three minutes after the restart. There was nothing controversial about this effort, just Giggs weighting the ball perfectly through Pompey's defence for Rooney to place his finish home, his 10th of the season for United.

His hat-trick came in the 54th minute, from the penalty spot. Piquionne was penalised for fouling Giggs - and Rooney sent Begovic the wrong way from 12 yards.

Giggs netted with a free-kick three minutes from full-time for their fourth goal.

Kuszczak (8): Had 2 good saves in each halves to help his cause in the keeper battle at United.

Neville (6.5): Tough duel with Boeteng, did not go forward much.

Brown (7): Did reasonalby well, especially with Vidic off-form.

Vidic (6): Is his mind in Spain, unsettled by Pompey attackers.

Evra (7): Penetrating attacking but defending was mixed.

Valencia (7.5): His pace is too much for Portsmouth to handle.

Fletcher (7): OK in first half, did better in 2nd half.

Carrick (6): Expected to be involved more.

Giggs (7): Good vision and experience.

Scholes (6.5): Did well passing forward, but held ball too long at occasions.

Rooney (8): Hat-trick.

Anderson (sub Carrick 76, 5) Did nothing much.

26 November 2009

Man United 0 Besiktas 1

Turkish side Besiktas ended United's 23-match unbeaten home record in the Champions League. Rodrigo Tello's first-half effort did the damage, and goalkeeper Rustu Recber put in a brillant display to ensure United did not score.

Slack defending created the space for Tello to shoot after 20 minutes. The long-range strike itself took a slight deflection off Rafael Da Silva that took it out of Foster's reach and catch him slightly flat-footed.

22 November 2009

Man United 3 Everton 0

Darren Fletcher scored a memorable goal as he launched Manchester United on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Everton.

Although they were already well on top against the Merseysiders who, apart from a brief five-minute second-half flurry were completely outclassed, United were struggling to make the breakthrough until Fletcher fired home a magnificent volley.

Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia were also on target to complete the Red Devils' biggest win since August and ensure they heeded Sir Alex Ferguson's pre-match call for a more clinical attitude.

Van der Sar (7.5): Important brave save at the feet of Cahill and another good save from Rodwell late in the game.

Rafael (6.5): Excellent first half, especially when attacking. Lack of height showed in 2nd half.

Brown (7.5): Did well, capped by an excellent tackle when Saha was almost clean through.

Vidic (7.5): The same old Vidic, physical and committed.

Evra (9): Did his mate Park brought back some ginseng? Excellent stamina and great attacking play.

Valencia (7.5): He is fast, he is strong, he defends and he scores. Only setback is he is one-footed.

Carrick (8): Controlled midfield in a steady way, run into open space for teammate to pass and a well-taken goal.

Fletcher (9): Superb goal, industrious effort and great defensive play.

Giggs (7): Link up well with Evra and good assist for the 2nd goal.

Owen (6): Made good runs, but finishes and passes could not match the runs.

Rooney (7): Hassle the defenders and bring energy to his team mates.

Substitutes

Scholes (sub Rafael 63, 6.5) Good eye for gaps to make precise passes.

Obertan (sub Rooney 74, 6) Another cameo, ahead of Nani at the moment

Gibson (sub Carrick 82, 5) Make up the number.

10 November 2009

Chelsea 1 Man United 0

Chelsea scored in the 76th minute when Ashley Cole was alleged to have been fouled by Fletcher on the left flank (which TV replays showed that it is not a foul).

Captain Terry (and Anelka) rose to glance Lampard’s free-kick into the corner of the net but United were furious that Drogba appeared to be in an offside position as the ball bounced beyond Van der Sar and into the net. Drogba had also pushed Wes Brown to the ground during the corner.

7 Van der Sar: Did well generally, Drogba was defintiely interfering with play from an off-side position by going for the ball that led to the goal and being so near the keeper.

7 O’Shea: Another stable performance. Made decent crosses while supporting Valencia.

7.5 Brown: Handled Chelsea's attack well.

8 Evans: Showed his agression, and that is what we need when Vidic is not in the team!

6.5 Evra: Out of position on occasions and no end-products when attacking.

6.5 Valencia: Ensured that cole did not attack too much.

7.5 Fletcher: Great physical presence, if only he could shoot better.

7 Anderson: Good display, need to make more forward runs.

7 Carrick: Covered lots of ground and disrupting Chelsea's play.

7 Giggs: Did well, but should have opted to shoot then trying to pass when in good position.

7.5 Rooney: Played well as a lone striker, more alive in the 2nd half.
Substitutes

5.5 Obertan (Giggs 84) Should have came on earlier, lively cameo.

5 Owen (Anderson 84) Not enough time for him to put in any decent shot.

06 November 2009

Man United 3 CSKA Moscow 3

United qualified for the Champions League knock-out stages after coming from two goals down to draw with CSKA Moscow.

Alan Dzagoev put the Russians ahead before Michael Owen levelled with an instinctive finish. However, slack defending allowed Milos Krasic to score before the visitors' extended their lead through Vasili Berezutsky just after half time.

United were then denied what looked like a clear penalty when Darren Fletcher was fouled in the box - and the Scottish midfielder was booked for diving to add insult to injury. Federico Macheda hit the inside of the post as United piled on the pressure late on and Paul Scholes pulled a goal back after 84 minutes, heading home from Gary Neville's cross.

Antonio Valencia's deflected shot in injury time - which will go down as a Georgi Schennikov own-goal - secured the draw United needed.

03 November 2009

Man United 2 Blackburn 0

United big guns Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney fired as the Reds defeated Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford.

Sam Allardyce's men were proving stubborn opposition until Berbatov's acrobatic volley 10 minutes into the second half broke the deadlock. Wayne Rooney's stylish finish after 87 minutes sealed the victory.

Nikola Kalinic had a goal harshly ruled out for offside in injury time for Blackburn.

Van der Sar (6.5) Not much to do, did ok when called upon.

Evra (7) Got forward often but mostly no end result, only 1 misplaced shot turn out to be assist for 1st goal.

Brown (7) One miscued error that was not punished, otherwise untroubled.

Evans (7) Good game, need to pass the ball quicker though.

O’Shea (7) Good defending, but did not support Valencia well enough.

Nani (6.5) Decision-making is his main weakness.

Carrick (7) Tackled and challenged for ball for a change. Made some good passes.

Anderson (6) Lost when defending midfield, slightly better when attacking.

Valencia (7) Strong and pacy, help out defence as well.

Rooney (7) OK display and a good goal.

Berbatov (7.5) Superb goal, could have got a hat-trick if not for poor finishing and great goal-keeping.

Obertan (for Nani 63, 5.5) Did not take his chances well, decent pace.

Owen (for Berbatov 79, 6) Lively and could have scored.

29 October 2009

Barnsley 0 Man United 2

DANNY Welbeck and Michael Owen scored to send Manchester United through to the last eight of the Carling Cup.

Welbeck headed home from close range after six minutes, and although Barnsley had some decent chances themselves, Owen's sharply taken goal just before the hour settled matters.

The main negative on the night for United was a straight red card for Gary Neville after the skipper's foul on Adam Hammill after 63 minutes.

Liverpool 2 Man United 0

MANCHESTER United suffered another nightmare against Liverpool with Fernando Torres and David Ngog scoring and Nemanja Vidic being sent for the third successive time against Rafael Benitez's men.

Spain star Torres held off Rio Ferdinand to strike a fierce shot past Edwin van der Sar on 65 minutes. Antonio Valencia came closest to levelling when he cracked an angled drive against the bar, but the Reds plight worsened when Vidic was sent off for a second yellow card. Moments earlier referee Andre Marriner only gave Jamie Carragher a yellow card when he felled Michael Owen when the substitute striker was arguably through on goal. Javier Mascherano was sent off for Liverpool late on for a second yellow before Ngog scored to seal the win.

Van der Sar (7): Made excellent saves but did not cover near post for Torres goal

O’Shea (6.5): Solid defending, link up with Valencia not as good.

Ferdinand (5.5): Disappointment for his standard, out-muscled by Torres.

Vidic (6.5): Played hard and did not deserve the sending off.

Evra (6): Did not do too well both in attack and defence.

Valencia (6): Crosses not too good, but a decent display and hit the post with a good effort.

Scholes (6): OK display.

Carrick (6): No inspiring passes.

Giggs (5.5): Below par performance

Rooney (6): Could not do much after returning from injury.

Berbatov (6): Not much inspiration, not helped by referee also.

Subs:

Owen (sub Berbatov 74, 5.5) OK.

Nani (sub Scholes 74, 5.5) Bring a little more penetration.

22 October 2009

CSKA Moscow 0 Man United 1

United maintained their 100 per cent Champions League record thanks to a late goal from Antonio Valencia against CSKA Moscow. Valencia had fired a second-half warning shot when he rocketed a volley against the bar from outside the box, and he eventually beat Igor Akinfeev with an angled shot with just four minutes left. It was Valencia's second goal in two games following his strike against Bolton at the weekend.

Van der Sar (6.5): Seldom threatened.

Neville (7): Turned back the years with a good display, one of the better crossers of the ball.

Ferdinand (6): Did ok.

Vidic (6): Need to regain his form soon.

Fabio (6.5): Good attacking option, defensively still need improvement. A lack of concentration almost cost Utd a goal.

Valencia (7): Played well in the 2nd half, especially last 20 min. Too predictable before that.

Scholes (7): His tackles were well-timed and make good long passes.

O’Shea (6.5): Good performance for Mr Versatile.

Anderson (5): Wasteful in possession, did not know what to do with the ball at times.

Nani (6): Frustrating decision-making after beating defenders, played better near the end.

Berbatov (6.5): Not much service, not suitable as a lone striker, light up after Owen's entry.

Subs:

Brown (sub Ferdinand 57, 6) One rusty moment, else well done.

Owen (sub Scholes 70, 5.5) Completely missed a volley.

Carrick (sub Fabio 88) Too late to rate

19 October 2009

Man Utd 2 Bolton 1

Antonio Valencia scored his first Manchester United goal as the Reds went top of the Premier League. Sir Alex Ferguson's men were ahead early on when Zat Knight scored an own-goal before Valencia struck from close range with 33 minutes gone.

15 minutes from time when Bolton dragged themselves back into the contest when Kevin Davies launched a far post cross towards Taylor, the midfielder steered his header into the left corner.

Van Der Sar (7) : Steady and composed display after recovering from injury.

Neville (6): Poor clearance that led to Bolton's goal. Lack of height was exposed. Fared better going forward.

Ferdinand (6.5): Above average display, could not win much aerial battle without Vidic.

Evans (6.5): Need to improve on his strength and header to cope with the bigger strikers.

Evra (6): Lack of height exposed cruelly for the goal.

Valencia (7.5): Actively involved in the game and generally made good decisions, a well-taken goal.

Carrick (6.5): Steadied the midfield, but did not create much.

Anderson (6): Cannot stop anyone in the midfield and foul unnecessarily.

Giggs (7): Another good effort, held the ball wel in the last few minutes.

Owen (6.5): Made intelligence runs and good understanding with Berbatov.

Berbatov (8): Great inspirations, but no one could finish his passes and flicks. Almost scored, but denied by a great save.

Subs:

O’Shea (sub Evra 83, 6.5)) Size and height does matter against big strikers.

Welbeck (sub Owen 83, 5) Out of tune with the rest.

Scholes (sub Anderson 86, 5.5) Did nothing much.

02 October 2009

Man United 2 Wolfsburg 1

Dzeko could well be on a short list for next close season after his header put Wolfsburg ahead after 55 minutes and the Reds unbeaten home record stretching back 21 games to 2005 was in jeopardy.

Well it was for four minutes until Giggs kept his remarkable early season impact going with the equaliser. It took a wicked deflection but his form this season deserved the good fortune to register his 150th goal for United.

Inevitably the Welshman was also involved as United completed the comeback from going a goal down when he intelligently set up Carrick for a delightful winning goal after 78 minutes.

Stoke City 0 Man United 2

MANCHESTER United picked up their seventh consecutive win in all competitions thanks to goals from Dimitar Berbatov and John O'Shea against Stoke.

As expected Stoke provided tough opposition but the introduction of Ryan Giggs after the break sparked United, who are now top thanks to Chelsea's defeat at Wigan.

Giggs, who was the star player in last week's memorable derby win, maintained his fine form to set up both goals.

25 September 2009

Man United 1 Wolves 0

MANCHESTER United progressed to the Carling Cup last 16 despite playing for over an hour with 10 men against Wolves.

Full-back Fabio Da Silva was sent off early on for a professional foul on Michael Kightly, but Danny Welbeck scored after the break to send the Reds through. Carrick played a ball to the Mancunian striker who exchanged a swift one-two with Owen before he drilled in a low shot that his more experienced front partner would have been proud of.

21 September 2009

Man United 4 City 3

United free transfer striker Michael Owen snatched an incredible victory deep into stoppage time in one of the most memorable derbies of all time.

Wayne Rooney scored early for United but Ben Foster gifted City an equaliser through Gareth Barry. Darren Fletcher and Craig Bellamy then traded goals to take the score up to 3-3 before substitute Owen's remarkable strike.

In the fifth minute of stoppage-time, when England’s fourth highest scorer had been shunted so far down the list of talking points he was not even worth a mention, the substitute strode onto Ryan Giggs’ precise pass, looked up and calmly found the bottom right corner.

Foster (4): Should have made a simple clearance instead of dribbling back to penalty area for Tevex to snatch it. Could have covered his near post better for 3rd city's goal.

O'Shea (5.5): Was a tad too slow for Bellamy.

Ferdinand (5): Looked rusty, should not have rushed him to play in the game.

Vidic (6.5): An average performance.

Evra (7): Most of the attacks comes from him and Giggs on the left.

Park (6): Shooting needs improvement, effort was ok.

Fletcher (8.5): Got better as the game goes on. Two good headed goals.

Anderson (6.5): Completely missing in first half, only woke up in 2nd half.

Giggs (9): How Giggs will be missed when he retires.

Rooney (7): Well taken goal, but did not do much after that.

Berbatov (7): Would have scored on a luckier day, good technique.

Subs:

Valencia (6.5): (sub Park 62) Strong on the ball and make decent crosses.

Owen (7.5): (sub Berbatov 77) Did well to stay on side and calm goal.

Carrick (5.5): (sub Anderson 90) Cameo.

16 September 2009

Besiktas 0 Man United 1

MANCHESTER United secured an opening Champions League victory against Besiktas thanks to Paul Scholes' second-half header in Istanbul. The game looked to be heading towards a stalemate but when Besiktas goalkeeper Hakan Arikan could only parry Nani's shot away, Scholes was on hand to head home after 77 minutes.

There were precious few other chances in a tight game, with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson electing to start with just Wayne Rooney up front. The goal came after Rooney and Michael Carrick were taken off for Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen. Nemanja Vidic was booked late on for kicking the ball away.

15 September 2009

Spurs 1 Man Utd 3

A great comeback against Spurs again. Defoe scored an acrobatic 1st min goal. Giggs hits back with a great freekick and Anderson finally scored a League goal just before half-time. Scholes got sent off for an offence that do not really deserve the 2nd yellow. And Rooney scored even when United is down to 10 men.

Foster (7.5): Great save from Jenas, looked more and more composed.

O'Shea (7.0): Make some good forward passes and generally comfortable in defence.

Ferdinand (7.5): Played well depsite just returning from injury.

Vidic (7.5): Another solid display.

Evra (8.0): Won the battle against Lennon. Made some forward runs.

Fletcher (7.5): Great tackling, but passes were sometimes poor.

Scholes (6.5): Played well till he got the harsh sending off.

Giggs (7.5): Great freekick and good stamina.

Anderson (7.5): Finally a goal! Is Anderson back?

Rooney (7.5): Good goal and harass the defenders.

Berbatov (7.5): Brilliant touches and flicks, could have scored.

Substitutes

Carrick (6.0) (sub Berbatov 61): Beefed up the midfield.
Nani (6.0) (sub Anderson 80): Some tricks here and there.

09 September 2009

Man Utd 2 Arsenal 1

A bit overdue...

Denilson slid a pass through to Arshavin in the 40th min, and he found space between United's defence and midfield which Ferguson's team selection was supposed to prevent. Quickly Arshavin turned and let fly with a rasper of a drive. There was plenty of pace on the shot but Foster can only push it into the roof of the net.

The Gunners were in front and on top when Rooney went down under Manuel Almunia's challenge just before the hour mark. There was at least some contact this time but it was limited enough to leave Wenger gnashing his teeth, especially as Andrey Arshavin had been denied a stone-wall spot-kick earlier. Rooney sent Almunia the wrong way from the spot to equalise.

In the 64th min, United got their second. In truth, Giggs' free-kick would not have threatened Almunia if Diaby had not stuck his head on it and deflected it straight into the corner of his own goal.

2009 Champions League Draw

Samuel Eto'o and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be back at their old clubs as Inter and Barcelona were drawn together in Group F in the Champions League, along with Dynamo Kiev and Rubin Kazan. The other big draw is Real Madrid, some people's favourites for the title, against AC Milan - where Kaka will return - and fellow big spenders Marseille, who could cause an upset in Group C.

Manchester Utd, in Group B, face tough trips to CSKA Moscow, Besiktas and Wolfsburg in the English clubs' hardest draw, with Liverpool also given a tough test in Lyon, Fiorentina and Hungarian side Debreceni in Group E. Chelsea will be happy with their draw as it's Jose Mourinho's old club FC Porto, Atletico Madrid and Cypriot side APOEL in Group D; while Arsenal are also sitting pretty as they face Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar, Olympiakos and Belgian side Standard Liege in Group H.

Other:

Group A: Bayern Munich, Juventus, Bordeaux, Maccabi Haifa

Group G: FC Sevilla, Rangers, VfB Stuttgart, Unirea Urziceni

23 August 2009

Wigan 0 Man Utd 5

Wayne Rooney joined the 100 club and Michael Owen got off the mark as Manchester United re-discovered that winning habit in emphatic style, 5-0 at Wigan.

Rooney made the breakthrough in the 56th minute with a fine header from Valencia's cross. Dimitar Berbatov found the target in the 58th minute after chipping the keeper. Rooney got his second nine minutes later with a lucky deflected shot.

Owen made his mark in the 85th minute after replacing Rooney with a cool finish off the post from Nani's pass. Nani completed the scoring in stoppage time with a superb free-kick that left the keeper stranded.

Foster (7.5): Two excellent saves and good positioning.

Neville (7.5): Add stability to the defence.

Vidic (7.5): No trouble from Wigan, make some good challenges.

Evans (6.5): Need to pass and clear better.

Evra (7): Attack as always, no end result though.

Valencia (6.5): Good cross for the first goal, could not handle physical play from Wigan.

Fletcher (6): An asset when defending, a liability when attacking.

Scholes (7): His vision is still there.

Nani (7): Great freekick and a good pass to Owen.

Rooney (8): 2 goals, but still not at his best.

Berbatov (8): Finese, classy, and now also track back.

Owen (sub Rooney 72, 6.5) Good goal and more will come.

O’Shea (sub Evans 72, 5.5) Not much to do (not his fault though).

Gibson (sub Scholes 72, 6.5) Dare to shoot and shoot well.

20 August 2009

Burnley 1 Man United 0

United suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Premier League minnows Burnley at Turf Moor. Robbie Blake's volley after 19 minutes proved decisive as Reds midfielder Michael Carrick saw a penalty saved by Brian Jensen just before half time.

United, who started with Michael Owen up front, piled on the pressure after the break but could find no way through.

18 August 2009

Burnley vs Man Utd Preview

Injuries hit United as we are set to see Brown & O'shea in the centre of defence!
With Neville, Rafael, Rio and Vidic certainly out and Evans minor injuries, the defence will rely on the fringe players. Nani may also be rested after re-injuring his shoulder.

The starting eleven shld be:

Foster, Fabio, Brown, O'shea, Evra, Park, Valencia, Carrick, Anderson, Rooney, Berbatov.

United should win by 2 goals.

17 August 2009

Man Utd 1 Birmingham 0

Wayne Rooney stepped out of Cristiano Ronaldo's enormous shadow to ensure Manchester United began the defence of their Premier League title with a 1-0 victory over Birmingham. Rooney rised to meet Nani's cross, then tapping home when his 34th-minute header bounced back off a post.

Foster (7.5): Played well and cleared his lines with solid punching. A great save from Benitez.

Fabio (6.5): Was a threat going forward, but defnsively, out of position on occasions.

O'Shea (6.5): Not much to do most of the time.

Evans (6.5): Not much from Birmingham's lone striker.

Evra (8): Attack well during 1st half, made a goal line clearnace and good tackles.

Valencia (6.5): Need to shoot when in good position, easing into the team.

Fletcher (6): Save him for bigger matches, not much of an attacking threat. A bad miss!

Scholes (6.5): Almost got yellow with his rash challenges. Decent outing.

Nani (7): Made good runs and the defenders got phyiscal and injured him.

Rooney (8): A goal! Link up play with Berbatov is good.

Berbatov (7): Great touches, but not much support from midfield.

Giggs sub Nani (45min, 6): Ok, did not do too much
Owen sub Berbatov (74min, 6.5) Missed late chance, but made good runs
Brown sub Evans (74min, 5.5) Not much to do

Preview: Man Utd vs Birmingham

There are some defensive problems in the team right now. Van de Sar, Vidic and Rafael were already ruled out. Neville, Brown still not fit and now Evans sustain a minor ankle injury. Let's not forget the foster was also pulled out of the England squad. In the midfield, however, only Nani will be missed. And Berbatov should be fit again after sustain knocks during the Cummunity Shield.

Birmingham was promoted this season and had bought some players, though none is really outstanding. Perhaps, McFadden is their most skilful player. They had, however, a hard tackling midfield, and will do well if referee is lenient and allow overly-physical contest.

My team prediction will be:

Foster, Fabio, O'shea, Ferdinand, Evra, Park, Valencia, Fletcher, Carrick, Rooney, Berbatov

Score will be 3-0 to Utd.

Man Utd 2 Chelsea 2 (Utd lost 1-4 on penalties)

UNITED fluffed their penalty shootout lines after clawing their way back into the Community Shield at Wembley. Giggs and Evra missed their penalties, while Chelsea players scored all 4 to win.

United took the lead with the first real attack of the game in the 10th minute. Darren Fletcher's sublime cross-field pass was collected by Nani and the Portugal winger beat Ivanovic and Michael Essien before sending a 25-yard drive beyond Cech and into the far right corner.

Chelsea equalised in the 52nd minute through Ricardo Carvalho's diving header. Lampard and Florent Malouda had combined on the left and when the winger sent over a volleyed cross, Drogba and Foster collided as they went for the ball. Foster's attempted clearance fell straight to Carvalho who dived to head the Blues level from eight yards.

The London outfit took the lead in controversial circumstances in the 70th minute after Ballack appeared to elbow Evra. While the United player was down Chelsea broke away and Drogba's pass to Lampard allowed the England midfielder space to beat Foster with a crisp drive. The ball struck the inside of the left post and bounced over the line before spinning back out, however it was clearly a legitimate goal.

With seconds remaining Rooney broke clear of the Chelsea defence and slipped the ball beyond Cech for a dramatic equaliser, but United were not so clinical in the shoot-out.

United 2 Valencia 0

Only Michael Owen will know how he failed to score on his Old Trafford debut. In front of the watching England manager Fabio Capello, Sir Alex Ferguson’s “most controversial” summer signing, was presented with three gilt-edge opportunities to get his name on the score-sheet, only to fluff his lines on each occasion.

And so it was down to Rooney to put United ahead on 52 minutes – and he owed much to Antonio Valencia, who impressed on his first appearance in front of his new fans. Taking the ball to the byline on the right, the Ecuadorian lifted a cross into the six yard box, which Rooney powered into the top corner.

Valencia was once again the provider for Cleverley to seal the win, beating a man before centering for Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian failed to connect, as did Federico Macheda, but Cleverley made no mistake tucking the ball home.

Audi Cup: Man Utd 2 Boca Juniors 1

Anderson netted his first goal for the club with a stunning free-kick. He curled an unstoppable free-kick from outside the right-hand corner of the penalty area into the far corner of Roberto Abbondanzieri's goal for his first ever goal for the Red Devils.

Valencia then scored on his Manchester United debut. He received the ball centrally from Rooney and, with a dip of the shoulder, he skipped past two Boca defenders before taking aim and releasing a shot from the edge of the area which squirmed under Abbondanzieri's body and in.

Federico Insua reduced the arrears in the 55th minute as the Argentinians dominated the second half, but Sir Alex Ferguson's side held on to reach the final with a score of 2-1.

Darron Gibson crossed after collecting a superb crossfield pass from Anderson, and though Dimitar Berbatov was repelled by Mohammed Farizal Marlias, Rooney was on hand to expertly steer a shot into the top corner.

Rooney then threaded a superb pass through the home defence, Nani applied the finish and it appeared United would saunter home.

Mohammed Amri Yahyah, one of only two full internationals to start for the Malaysian side, who halved the deficit just before the interval, then levelled eight minutes after the re-start. On both occasions, questions could be asked of the goalkeeper.

But Michael Owen marked his Manchester United debut with a late winner to save his side's blushes in Kuala Lumpur. When Zoran Tosic was upended in the penalty area going for a 50-50 challenge, there was Owen to pounce on the loose ball and stroke the Red Devils to victory.

Man Utd Latest Transfer News 10 Jul 09 Campbell Berbatov Aguero

Manchester United striker Fraizer Campbell is poised to join Sunderland after the clubs agreed a £5.5 million transfer fee for the England Under-21 international. The Huddersfield-born forward, who made just four senior appearances for the Premier League champions whom he joined as a schoolboy, is due to undergo medical tests on Wearside and discuss personal terms with the deal likely to be finalised early next week.

Dimitar Berbatov's short and tumultuous Old Trafford stay looks increasingly bleak as Utd weigh up a swap deal to lure Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero. United are understood to have initially offered £34million and Portuguese bit-part winger Nani as a makeweight for the Argentine ace. But the Spanish outfit, not keen on Nani, rejected the offer and now the Premier League champions are set to return with last season's £30.75million Bulgarian recruit and £17.1million to force a deal with Atletico, according to Spanish daily AS.

Latest Man Utd Transfer New: In for Ibrahimovic?

Manchester United have been keeping their eyes on Inter ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic and are ready to make a bid after missing out on Karim Benzema, according to The Mirror. Despite reports in England, Inter director Lele Oriali claimed on Tuesday that the striker will be staying with the Nerazzurri. Inter have regularly underlined their intention to keep Ibrahimovic, managing to keep Barcelona at bay last month, despite reports of a mega offer.

Furthermore, Jose Mourinho recently suggested that no player will be sold once pre-season begins, which will be tomorrow morning for Inter. If reports in England are to be believed, Ferguson would have to offer the Nerazzurri a mega payment within the next 24 hours in order to beat Mourinho's transfer deadline. Over the last few weeks, reports in Italy regarding the striker's future have become less frequent, suggesting he is likely to remain.

Latest Man Utd Transfer News (8 Jul 09) Obertan Foster

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Bordeaux winger Gabriel Obertan. The 20-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the Premier League champions. Obertan, a Paris-born France Under-21 international who can fill several attacking roles, will have to wait for his first-team bow, however, as an unspecified minor injury will keep him out of United's forthcoming tour of the Far East. Obertan underwent a medical yesterday and reports in France have claimed he will cost the Red Devils around £3million.

Manchester United have handed goalkeeper Ben Foster a new four-year deal. It is a welcome boost for the 26-year-old England international, whose career has been hampered by injury.

Man Utd Latest Transfer news (5 Jul 09) Eto'o Nani Young Scholes

Empoli youngster Alberto Massacci claims he has signed for Premier League champions Manchester United. The 16-year-old right-back has never figured in the first-team squad of the Serie B side but impressed United's scouts during an international youth team event last year, where he was voted player of the tournament. Reports suggest Massacci has already spent three days in Manchester, having a medical, and is set to fly back on Sunday to sign on the dotted line, and the teenager admits he has been left somewhat stunned by it all.

English tabloid The News of the World suggests that the 22-year old has been left with an uncertain future at Old Trafford following the Premier League champions’ purchase of Antonio Valencia from Wigan for €16m.

Recent rumours are touting Samuel Eto'o to move to Manchester United this summer despite alleged interest from cross-town rivals. Eto'o is apparently willing to take a large wage drop and turn his head at the riches of city for the success of United.

Both the Daily Star Sunday and the Sunday Mirror have linked Toffees boss David Moyes with a move for the 34-year-old Scholes. The People reports that Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Young is a close target for Man Utd. Ashley Young (23) has made his England debut and is probably one of the most exciting young players in the game today. A dream move to Man Utd will of course be tempting.

Latest Man Utd Transfer News (3 Jul 09) Owen Fabiano Huntelaar Possebon

Michael Owen could be a Manchester United player by the end of Friday after a day of medical checks in the city. The England international is without a club following the expiry of his contract with Newcastle United and it appeared only Stoke City and Hull City were interested in offering him a contract. But now it appears Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to snap up a player who is fourth in the all-time goalscorers list for his country. Newspaper reports suggest the contract will be purely incentive based, depending on minutes played and goals scored.

Luis Fabiano is said to be a target for Manchester United Football Club. Reports in the Daily Mirror claim United are willing to pay a fee of £16million for the Brazilian international, who is currently contracted to Spanish side Sevilla.

Manchester United Football Club may ask Real Madrid about Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Reports suggest the Reds will now turn to the Spanish giants in a bid to persuade them to sell Huntelaar, the Dutch international striker, for around £12million this summer.

Rodrigo Possebon will spend next season at Sporting Braga. The Brazilian midfielder is being farmed out on loan to the Portuguese club as part of his grooming with United.

I was told he was raising my pay to bring it to the level where my reputation is in the Premier League and Europe. “After Milan and Real Madrid made their offers, Barcelona came in - they wanted to pay £30m for my services, but after Sir Alex's move, I am definitely staying in Manchester until my contract expires in 2012.”

After securing Wigan's Antonio Valencia, Manchester United could now bolster their forward line with a move for £11m-rated Toulouse forward Andre-Pierre Gignac. United's chances of snatching French striker Benzema received a boost when Real's bid to snap him up failed yesterday after Bernabeu striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar refused to be part of a swap deal that would have taken him to Lyon.

Ferguson has been tracking 20-year-old Sanchez - known as “El Nino Maravilla” (the Wonder Boy) in South America - for some time and bringing in another wideman will help fill the huge void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s £80m departure to Real Madrid. Sanchez, capped 22 times for his country, has a £15m buyout clause in his contract.

After months of speculation, People newspaper says that Man Utd have clinched Wigan midfielder Antonio Valencia for £15.25m. If Valencia has signed, or is set to sign, he looks a welcome addition as the Ecuadorian midfielder has experienced his best season yet for Wigan, with a number of impressive performances. In total this season, Valencia has scored three goals and created five assists in a total of 31 games with the Latics.

Man Utd Transfer News (26 Jun 09) Huntelaar Benzema

Klaas Jan Huntelaar is the latest big-name striker to be linked with a move to Manchester United. With attempt to lure Karim Benzema to Old Trafford looks fraught with difficulty, it is not a shock either that it has been suggested a move for Huntelaar by Sir Alex Ferguson is on the cards.

Sir Alex Ferguson took another step towards the £30m capture of striker Karim Benzema. But Manchester United could yet face fierce competition from bitter transfer market rivals Real Madrid. Lyon opened the door to the sale of prize asset Benzema by making a £15m move for Porto striker Lisandro Lopez. It is a clear indication that Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is preparing to cash in on his 21-year-old star.

Manchester United will have to fork out big to land Douglas Costa. The Reds wanted to take the 18-year-old Brazilian on trial before making a decision on him, but Gremio insist the £18million-rated forward is too good for such a proposal.

Bayern Munich are determined to keep hold of star midifielder Franck Ribery, but must now be aware that the new wave of cash flooding the transfer market will make him more affordable to interested clubs. The Bundesliga side have already stated the France international will not leave unless a rival club comes up with an offer they cannot refuse, which general manager Uli Hoeness now says will have to be a ''crazy'' bid.

Manchester United winger Nani hopes to play more once Cristiano Ronaldo departs for Real Madrid in an £80m transfer. Cantona wants to manage either Man Utd or England

Eric Cantona has said that he has ambitions to manage Manchester United one day, and if he doesn't get that job, then he'd like to take over as England boss.

The 43-year-old may be coach of the French beach soccer team, but is in no doubt his destiny lies at the helm of one of the world's biggest soccer teams. "I don't know in how many years' time, but my name is already written on the Manchester United bench," he said in an interview in Monday's La Gazzetta dello Sport. I'm not saying (Alex) Ferguson will go. I hope with all my heart that he has eternal life with the Reds."

But Cantona's alternative is no less ambitious, as he harbours hopes of graduating to manage a national side. "The only alternative possible for me is the English national team," he said. "I like Fabio Capello a lot, as a man and a motivator. He's tough, precise and attentive to details.
"But I assure that sooner or later you will see me at the helm of England because I'm part of the history of Manchester (United). I'm number one."

Newcastle, Middlesbrough, West Brom relegated

Newcastle United have been relegated from the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa. Gareth Barry's 38th minute shot deflected off Damien Duff and wrongfooted Steve Harper for the only goal of the game.

WBA was already relegated before the last match.

Hull 0 Man Utd 1

Hull escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth despite slumping to a 1-0 defeat against an under-strength Manchester United.

United made 10 changes as Sir Alex Ferguson rested his biggest names ahead of the Champions League final on Wednesday but the final score meant there could be no complaints.
Their starting XI had an average age of just 23, a figure boosted by the return of veteran club captain Gary Neville, 34.

United scored in the 24th minute with a ferocious strike from Gibson. The 21-year-old let fly from 25 yards with a powerful shot across goal that flew past Myhill into the top corner.

Man Utd News: Champions League, BPL Final Game

The Sun claims Manchester United will field the same team which secured a place in the Rome final with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, and that means Sir Alex will opt for the industry of Ji-Sung Park over a second striker. The only change to the starting line-up will be an enforced one with Darren Fletcher suspended for the red card he picked up against the Gunners and Ryan Giggs replacing him. Cristiano Ronaldo will again be deployed as a striker, with Wayne Rooney out on the left, as Sir Alex hopes to utilise the pace of the Portuguese star against a suspect Barcelona defence which is without Daniel Alves, Rafael Marquez and Eric Abidal. This also suggests that the Red Devils' boss has already decided skipper Rio Ferdinand will be fit enough to play, regardless of whether he gets a run-out against Hull City in Sunday's pivotal final Premier League game.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reassured the Premier League's relegation strugglers that Hull City will face no easy game on Sunday. Sir Alex has assured the side he chooses will be a determined one. "We have a league that has the best integrity in the world and we will play our part in that,'' he said. "No matter which team I play, it will represent Manchester United in the normal way. We are expected to win. We will go to win. That is the responsibility we always have.''

Man Utd Updates: Ronaldo, Ferdinand, Tevez

Cristiano Ronaldo has dropped the clearest hint yet that he intends to reject a summer move to Real Madrid by insisting he "only cares what happens next season at Manchester United". He mentioned that all his attention is fully focused on Wednesday's clash with Barcelona in Rome. "At the moment I am only thinking about the Champions League final independently of what will happen to me or my team-mates next season."

Rio Ferdinand is confident of being fit for the Champions League final on Wednesday despite Sir Alex Ferguson casting doubts over his chances of making the match. The skipper has already started ball work and feels he is completely on track to play in Rome against the Spanish champions.

Tevez's Old Trafford future has been the subject of intense debate, with United chief executive David Gill confirming last weekend that he expects some kind of closure on the Argentina star's two-year loan deal in June. His chances of remaining at Old Trafford seems low, as Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all continue to be linked with the forward, while Real Madrid are among the giant continental clubs keeping an eye on developments.

Nemanja Vidic completed a personal double on Sunday night as he was named Manchester United player of the year by both fans and his fellow players. Vidic picked up both awards after a season in which his formidable partnership at the back with Rio Ferdinand has played a major part in helping United retain their Barclays Premier League title.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who won both awards last season, did not end the night empty-handed as he once again received the goal of the season prize for his stunning effort at Porto in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Seventeen-year-old Federico Macheda, who burst onto the scene with the winner against Aston Villa on his debut, was named academy player of the year and James Chester clinched the reserve team prize.

Man United 0 Arsenal 0

We are the champions!!! Here we come, Rome!
United retained the Premier League title after gaining the point needed against Arsenal at Old Trafford. The match may not have been the thriller that fans were hoping for, but the Reds nevertheless sealed their 18th league title with a game to spare. It is United's third successive league title and they are now level with Liverpool in terms of league title wins.

Man Utd Transfer Rumours??

According to various reports in the British press, United have all but agreed a deal for the transfer of Corinthians' Dodo. It is thought that the Brazil Under-17 international will move to Old Trafford in February 2010 for a fee of around £5.4m.

Ibrahimovic's agent claimed that United and other big clubs are interested in the Inter high-scoring forward.

Wigan 1 Man Utd 2

What a close shave...now only 1 point to win the league!

Vidic failed to clear a Lee Cattermole punt into the area and Wigan forward Hugo Rodallega reacted to prod the ball home. Ferguson bring on the late season talisman Tevez in the 58th min and it only took three minutes for the cavalry to make another impact.

When Carrick drilled in a low shot-cum-pass Tevez managed to instinctively turn the ball home to equalise. Michael Carrick then slotted home the winner with a smart left-foot shot after 86 minutes to put United six points ahead of Liverpool with two games left.

Dimitar Berbatov - 9 in 28 start & 2 sub
Nemanja Vidic - 4 in 31 start and 1 sub
Carlos Tevez - 4 in 17 start and 10 sub

Looks like Tevez has the lowest scoring ratio (one in every 4 starts) in the league amongst the regular strikers.

United 2 City 0

We took another step towards retaining the Premier League title with a comfortable derby day victory over City. Ronaldo put the Reds ahead with a deflected free-kick, and Carlos Tevez added the second with a fine shot that went in off the post.

Despite City feeble attemp to rally after the break, United were never really in any trouble and return to the top of the league.

Arsenal 1 United 3

United are through to the final at Rome!

The Gunners were stunned by two goals in the first 11 minutes. Park Ji-sung slotted the first, cashing in on an unfortunate slip by Arsenal's teenage full-back Kieran Gibbs in the penalty area.
Ronaldo followed that up with a trademark free-kick from 40 yards which fairly rocketed into the net of goalkeeper Manuel Almunia.

Ronaldo added a magnificent third in the second-half following a lightning counter-attack as Arsenal pressed forward. Robin Van Persie slotted Arsenal's lone consolation from the penalty spot.

03 May 2009

Boro 0 United 2

United took another step towards the Premier League title with a routine victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside. PFA Player of the Year Ryan Giggs put the Reds ahead after 25 minutes and Ji-sung Park settled matters with a goal six minutes into the second half.

United 1 Arsenal 0

United will take a one-goal lead into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal thanks to John O'Shea's strike at Old Trafford. The defender slammed home a 17th minute goal to give the Reds a slender advantage to take to the Emirates Stadium next Tuesday.

Gunners keeper Manuel Almunia made some fine first-half saves, Cristiano Ronaldo struck the bar with a stunning, swerving second-half shot and Ryan Giggs was called back for an incorrect offside decision when through on goal.

27 April 2009

United 5 Spurs 2

United produced a sensational second-half fight back to stun Tottenham at Old Trafford and keep their Premier League title bid on track.Strikes from Darren Bent and Luka Modric sent Spurs in ahead at the break but United scored five goals in 22 thrilling minutes to take the points.

First Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty that was awarded when Heurelho Gomes was adjudged to have fouled Michael Carrick. Wayne Rooney then scored two goals either side of another Ronaldo effort before Dimitar Berbatov went some way to answering his critics with a close range strike.

United are now three points ahead of second-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.It cannot have gone unnoticed either the half-time introduction of Carlos Tevez was the catalyst for the onslaught, even if the popular Argentina forward did not get his name on the scoresheet.

23 April 2009

United 2 Portsmouth 0

United went three points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick against Portsmouth. Rooney struck after just nine minutes and substitute Carrick sealed the win with just eight minutes remaining.

The only negatives on the night for United were injuries sustained by Gary Neville - who lasted just 13 minutes - and his replacement John O'Shea.

20 April 2009

Utd 0 Everton 0 (2-4 penalty)

MANCHESTER United lost to Everton on penalties at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final. Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand missed their spot-kicks to end United's dream of a quintuple.

The referee was intimidated by Moyes and fail to give a clear penalty, another 50-50 penalty and only give 1 yellow card for Fellanidi for uncountables persistent fouls

16 April 2009

Porto 0 Utd 1

A stunning 40-yard goal from Cristiano Ronaldo was enough to see Manchester United past FC Porto and into last four of the Champions League at the Estádio do Dragão. The visitors got off to a dream start through Ronaldo’s goal on just six minutes and spurned a golden opportunity to score a second through Nemanja Vidic just before half-time.

The second half was a much better one for Porto as they had more of the play, but they struggled to create many clear opportunities and United held firm to progress. The Red Devils now meet Arsenal in the semi-finals after the Gunners defeated Villarreal in the night’s other quarter-final tie.

13 April 2009

Sunderland 1 Utd 2

Federico Macheda climbed off the bench to snatch victory for the second time in a week as Manchester United clawed their way back to the top of the Barclays Premier League table. The 17-year-old Italian needed just seconds to claim three points for his side with a 76th-minute winner at Sunderland and send the reigning champions back above Liverpool, who had briefly headed them as a result of their 4-0 win over Blackburn.

His intervention could not have been more timely with the Black Cats having dragged themselves back into the game courtesy of Kenwyne Jones' 55th-minute equaliser, his first goal since February 7. United looked to be in complete control when Paul Scholes capped a dominant start by heading the visitors into a 19th-minute lead, but they allowed the Wearsiders back into the game in front of a partisan crowd of 45,408.

08 April 2009

Utd 2 Porto 2

Manchester United face a tense battle to retain their place in this season's Champions League after failing to hold on to the late advantage provided by Carlos Tevez in a 2-2 draw against Porto. Although United were outplayed in the first half, Wayne Rooney's fortuitous 14th goal of the season had ensured the Red Devils were level heading into the final stages.

When Tevez turned home Rooney's back-flick five minutes from time, Sir Alex Ferguson's men must have thought they had come through a very difficult evening. But not for the first time, they lost concentration in defence and with just a minute left, Mariano found himself totally unmarked as he finished off a cross from the excellent Lisandro.

07 April 2009

Utd 3 Villa 2

Manchester United debutant Federico Macheda made himself an instant hero at Old Trafford with a last-minute winner in a thrilling 3-2 victory against Aston Villa. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as the Red Devils moved back above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
What a game!

27 March 2009

Fulham 2 Utd 0

United's Premier League wobble continued at Fulham where the nine-man Reds suffered a nightmare at Craven Cottage. Paul Scholes was sent off for handling in the box after just 18 minutes and Danny Murphy scored the resulting penalty, with Zoltan Gera sealing victory for Fulham with a smart finish after 86 minutes. And to compound the Reds' misery substitute Wayne Rooney was sent off late on for a second yellow card.

I do not know about others, but isn't the ball too near to avoid for Scholes' case?
Also for Rooney, the 2nd may not be a yellow is he is someone else.

United 1 Liverpool 4

...... ......
Vidic should not be sent off, from replay, he was not the last man! There was another player running towards the goalmouth just ahead of him! Plus, Gerrard is also pulling Vidic!

12 March 2009

Utd 2 Inter 0

Goals from Vidic and Ronaldo fired United into the Champions League quarter-finals at Old Trafford.

United were ahead after just four minutes when Vidic rose highest to head home Giggs' corner. And shortly after half time Ronaldo headed Wayne Rooney's cross into the back of the net to seal victory over Jose Mourinho's side.

Inter's Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit the bar with a header and substitute Adriano hit the inside of the post, but neither side fully managed to hit their stride.

09 March 2009

Fulham 0 Utd 4

United's march towards a quintet of trophies continued apace at Craven Cottage as Carlos Tevez helped sweep aside Fulham and earn a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Tevez scored twice before half-time and his double helped explain why Sir Alex Ferguson's men might lift five bits of silverware this season - nine of his 12 goals have come in cups. Wayne Rooney added another just after the break to end any hopes Fulham had of a comeback in a breathless quarter-final, with Ji-sung Park adding a fourth before full-time.

05 March 2009

Newcastle 1 Man U 2

Dimitar Berbatov fired Manchester United seven points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League, scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory at lowly Newcastle. The Bulgarian clinched the points with a 56th-minute strike, but United had to come from behind to re-establish their advantage over Chelsea and Liverpool with a game in hand.

There was jubilation on Tyneside when, with just nine minutes gone, Peter Lovenkrands ended Edwin Van der Sar's record of not having conceded a league goal since November 8 after the keeper failed to cling on to Jonas Gutierrez's shot. But it took the visitors just 11 minutes to restore parity through Wayne Rooney, and Berbatov ensured United's run of successive league wins stretched to 11 after Park Ji-Sung pounced on an error by Ryan Taylor.

02 March 2009

Utd 0 Spurs 0 (Utd won 4-1 on penalties)

The Carling Cup final was decided on penalties as Manchester United and Tottenham played out a goalless draw at Wembley. Ben Foster saved from Jamie O'Hara and David Bentley shot wide to give United the first domestic trophy of the season.

27 February 2009

Inter 0 Utd 0

Sir Alex Ferguson may not have added to his single win in a 13-match head-to-head with Jose Mourinho but this was a victory in every other sense for the current European Cup winning boss.

The reigning champions outplayed Inter Milan in Italy and surely Fergie will be adding a second success over his old adversary in the second leg at Old Trafford on March 11.

23 February 2009

Utd 2 Blackburn 1

United needed a Cristiano Ronaldo rocket to secure victory against a spirited Blackburn side at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney put the Reds ahead with a close-range finish before Roque Santa Cruz ended United's record run without conceding a league goal with the streak standing at 1,334 minutes.

A tight game with controversial decisions, yet a win is a win. Great!

20 February 2009

Utd 3 Fulham 0

It was Giggs last game, now it is Scholes, another great performance by the old guards, will it be Neville next?

United went five points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to goals from Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov and returning star Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford.

Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar completed his 14th consecutive league clean sheet as Sir Alex Ferguson's side continued their superb recent form.

16 February 2009

Derby 1 Utd 4

Ryan Giggs turned in a scintillating performance as Manchester United eased into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 4-1 victory over Derby at Pride Park.

Giggs did not get his name on the scoresheet as Nani, Darron Gibson, Cristiano Ronaldo and Danny Welbeck took the honours.

09 February 2009

West Ham 0 Utd 1

A rare right-footed goal from Ryan Giggs and a rather more predictable 13th consecutive Premier League clean sheet were enough for Manchester United to reclaim top spot with a 1-0 win over West Ham at Upton Park.

In a lacklustre game of huff and puff, with not much else in between, Edwin van der Sar never looked in serious danger of being denied a British record for not conceding a goal that now extends to 1,212 minutes.

06 February 2009

Utd 1 Everton 0

United extended their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League with a routine victory over Everton at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner from the penalty spot just before half time after Mikel Arteta fouled Michael Carrick as the Reds midfielder drove towards goal. The Reds also kept a record 12th consecutive Premier League clean sheet and rarely looked troubled by the visitors.

28 January 2009

WBA 0 Utd 5

A scintillating display of attacking football ensured United's biggest away win of the season on a night when the Reds set a new defensive record of eleven clean sheets. Goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez, Nemanja Vidic and a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo sealed a 5-0 victory over West Brom at The Hawthorns , who had their skipper Paul Robinson sent-off just before half-time.

At the other end, Edwin van der Sar kept his eleventh consecutive clean sheet to break Chelsea’s 2004/05 Premier League record and help the Reds move three points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table.

Utd 2 Tottenham 1

United’s quest for five major trophies continues apace in spite of a crippling injury list, as the Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the FA Cup fourth round. Harry Redknapp’s men took a surprise early lead through Roman Pavlyuchenko, but United’s first half display was otherwise outstanding as goals from Paul Scholes (albeit via a wicked deflection off Tom Huddlestone) and Dimitar Berbatov against his former club secured the win.

United will face either Forest or Derby away in the next round.

22 January 2009

Utd 4 Derby 2

Sir Alex Ferguson booked an impressive 14th domestic final appearance as Manchester United overhauled a first-leg deficit to ease into the Carling Cup showpiece at Wembley on March 1. Nani opened United's account, with John O'Shea and Carlos Tevez increasing the lead before half-time, and Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty ensured a Giles Barnes double did no lasting damage.

But the real price of a likely meeting with Tottenham will be assessed in the treatment room as injuries picked up by Rafael and Jonny Evans - part of an already depleted defence - and Nani and Anderson, who departed on a stretcher after the final whistle, are looked at.

20 January 2009

Bolton 0 Utd 1

Dimitar Berbatov's last-minute header earned Manchester United a 1-0 win at Bolton and sent his side to the Premier League summit for the first time this season.

Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen looked like denying the Red Devils with a superb individual display. But, after repelling three ferocious Cristiano Ronaldo free-kicks, Jaaskelainen was eventually beaten as Carlos Tevez wriggled free of the Trotters defence to cross for Berbatov, who powered home a six-yard header.

17 January 2009

Manucho joins Hull City on loan

Hull have struck a deal to sign United striker Manucho on loan for the rest of the season. The Angolan frontman has made one Barclays Premier League appearance for United, who let him spend part of last season on loan at Panathinaikos.

Hull have not yet secured a work permit for the 25-year-old but hope they will be able to achieve that before Saturday's match against Arsenal.

Utd 1 Wigan 0

Defence continues to be the best form of attack for United as a ninth successive Premier League clean sheet allowed them to move within two points of leaders Liverpool. Wayne Rooney's first-minute tap-in was enough to beat Wigan, who just about edged the remainder of the contest without being able to break down a stubborn United rearguard which is providing the foundation for this season's title tilt.

There was a cost to the Red Devils as Rooney is now facing a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury that forced him off not long after his ninth goal of the season.

United 3 Chelsea 0

It has certainly been one of those crazy weeks at United that crop up so often. Kicked off by the roller coaster Carlos Tevez contract saga row, the Reds abject display at Derby that cost them a Carling Cup semi final first leg advantage, Ronaldo's miraculous car crash escape and then the left field arrival of Rafa Benitez's spiky tirade at Sir Alex Ferguson. All that had had little to do with this showdown.

Fergie and Scolari hadn't seriously been able to drum up anymore drama in their press conferences but after what had gone on surrounding the Reds this week it would have been overload had they joined in and pumped up the build-up even more. But after that kind of relentless back-page and front page hogging events to this first tumultuous set-to of 2009 could the fare match the headline-hitting lead up events? Would it be Wembley `07 or Luzhniki Stadium `08. It fell between the two stools really. The classic immovable object being United's Old Trafford fortress and the irresistible force being Chelsea's outstanding away form this was always going to be tough to catalogue among the truly memorable encounters.

It was all too bitty, niggly and devoid of edge of your seat penalty box action to gatecrash the file of unforgettable matches. Inevitably there is always controversy attached to all these box office match ups. Fortunately, the linesman's first half injury time cock up didn't grab the headlines. Referee Howard Webb's assistant failed to see or acknowledge that Wayne Rooney had tapped a corner kick into play. Ryan Giggs ran over to the rolling ball, appeared to ask his colleague along the way if he'd played it, and then crossed the ball for Ronaldo to head home. Rooney was furious that his piece of ingenuity to catch Chelsea on the hop was missed by the officials and the goal was wiped out.

A Giggs corner seconds later converted by Nemanja Vidic via a Berbatov headed flick meant the ruled out goal was effectively demoted as a match highlight topic. Considering these two are Fergie's predicted pairing to ultimately be contesting the title in spring neither has actually proved their top match pedigree against other members of the Big Four this campaign. However, once United had got their nose in front there was only ever going to be one side who would register their first win in such battles. The Reds were rampant once they had chiseled out the Vidic advantage and a move worthy of the occasion in the 63rd minute cemented their supremacy. Ronaldo's back heel was swept across by Patrice Evra and Rooney stole in ahead of Ashley Cole to strike home.

United were so far ahead of their rivals that a 2-0 scoreline wouldn't have recorded their grip on this game but when Dimitar Berbatov snapped out of his slumber in the 87th minute to convert Ronaldo's free kick with a superb sidefoot volley it became a true reflection on a United display.

Derby County 1 Utd 0

With Derby’s in-your-face tactics the Reds struggled to impose themselves. It left young Danny Welbeck up front facing a tough task even with United’s Carling Cup talisman Carlos Tevez, shrugging off all the pre-match contract controversy to get the nod from Fergie, as his partner. There were none of the easy titbits provided by Dimitar Berbatov on the south coast four days earlier.
Derby persistence in piling pressure on United’s increasingly nervy side paid off after 30 minutes when Kris Commons enjoyed a ridiculous amount of space to line up and then crash in the opener from 25 yards.

05 January 2009

Southampton 0 United 3

UNITED eased into the FA Cup fourth round with an emphatic victory at St Mary's. Youngsters Danny Wellbeck and Darron Gibson scored either side of a Nani penalty as the Reds set up a fourth round clash at home to Tottenham.
